  • OSFA Spotlight:Lisa Clarke
    Lisa Clarke

Lisa Clarke, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, has been chosen as the OSFA spotlight this week for her multiple accomplishments while attending UF and for her continued dedication to the Greek community. Lisa is a fourth year student majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering and I currently in a combined degree program. By Spring 2008, she will have a Bachelors in Industrial Engineering and a Masters in Industrial Engineering-Engineering Management.

During her time as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated she has served as the corresponding secretary and is currently the president. Lisa has made many contributions to the Black Student Union including, executive director of Black History Month, director of programs, and assistant director of the student advocacy cabinet. She has served the Gainesville community through her dedication to service. Lisa has been a Girl Scouts troop leader, a minority ambassador, and a Prime Time Reading Academy after-school tutor.

When asked what being a Florida Greek mean to her, Lisa replied, "being Greek is a responsibility. It's more than just wearing letters and having fun, it's a vast amount of work and responsibility. We as members of the Greek community have been called to serve those less fortunate than us (homeless people, at-risk youth, etc.) and we should hold this responsibility at a high regard. Greek organizations should be used as a vehicle to perform God's work."

Fraternity suspended over 'Hood' party at John Hopkins University
    Sigma Chi

Johns Hopkins University has suspended the Sigma Chi fraternity because of a "Halloween in the Hood" party that drew protests by black students.

Black Student Union members protested the party on Monday, saying the appearance of the image and the language on the invitation highlighted racial tensions at Hopkins and the strained relations between the university and the surrounding community.

Each month a group of students is invited to lunch with Dr. Gene Zdziarski, the Dean of Students. The purpose of the program is to provide students with an opportunity to meet with "Dean Gene" and talk about student issues and concerns over an informal lunch.
